CreaTV San José Opens New State-of-the-Art Facility in Downtown San José
June 6, 2023
San Jose, CA – CreaTV San José is excited to celebrate the grand opening of its state-of-the-art facility, Open San José, on June 10, 2023 from 11am - 4pm. Open San José is an innovative space that promotes equitable access, civic engagement, and community building, and is home to CreaTV and six anchor partners—Chopsticks Alley Art, LEAD Filipino, Mosaic America, Northern California Public Media, San José Spotlight, and Works/San José.
The 18,000-square-foot facility, located at 38 S. Second St., features hybrid spaces for virtual and physical events, including art exhibitions, rehearsals, film screenings, and educational activities.
“CreaTV is a civic asset and platform for building culture and bringing the people of San José together,” said Knight Foundation Program Director Charles Thomas. “We are excited to be an investor and partner in expanding CreaTV's impact and reach in our community.”
Open San José's partnership and community engagement model prioritize the voices, stories, and experiences of underrepresented communities. It’s a model that inspired the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to invest $1 million in new technology to support the project.
"We are thrilled to offer Open San José as a community hub that caters to all groups using media and technology,” said Chad Johnston, CEO of CreaTV San José. “This project builds capacity for individuals and organizations to share stories, access information, collaborate effectively, and participate more actively in civic engagement.”
The culture and activation of the space is co-curated and co-designed by CreaTV and its community partners, with a focus on creating transformational change. “Open San José is not just a physical space, but a vision to bring the community together to learn, grow, and collaborate,” said Tanuja Bahal, CreaTV San José’s Board Chair. Chad Johnston adds, “We aspire to preserve the stories of our community and inspire the next generation of storytellers and changemakers.”
Open San José is a critical component in the revitalization of downtown San Josè, redefining how creative spaces are used to build community and make change, while bringing economic development, job growth and opportunities for San José residents and businesses.
The grand opening event will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony, art, performances, and an opportunity to explore the innovative community space that celebrates the richness of San José’s culture through dialogue, storytelling, and engagement.
